Collab Playlist: 2017

By Devon Chodzin ‘19

Most people agree that 2016 was a terrible year with an amazing soundtrack. Here’s to hoping that 2017 can be an incredibly good year with a similarly sweet soundtrack. I asked the staff at WKCO to describe what they’re anxiously awaiting this year in New Music, and here’s a snapshot of our Anticipated Releases!

Xiu Xiu's

Devon Chodzin ‘19: XIU XIU- FORGET: “Already, ‘Wondering’ has proven to be wildly entertaining. Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks was a lot of fun, and I’m always so impressed with Xiu Xiu’s productivity. I can’t get enough!”

At time of publication, the album has been leaked. It was originally set to be released on February 23rd.

Jens Lekman's

Isa Mojares ‘20: JENS LEKMAN- LIFE WILL SEE YOU NOW: “The album’s lead single ‘What’s That Perfume You Wear?’ is so playful and catchy, I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album. It’s the type of music that’s fun and makes you feel good.”

The Shins'

THE SHINS- HEARTWORMS:  “The Shins are just a comforting, familiar band, so it’s exciting to expect new music from them soon.”

Julia Waldow ‘17: RYAN ADAMS- PRISONER: “Ryan Adams is one of my favorite musical artists, and each of his albums brings something new and exciting to the table. Whether exploring rock, folk, or pop, Adams shines across every platform. I saw him live this summer in New York and cannot wait to hear what he’s come up with next!”

Real Estate's

REAL ESTATE- IN MIND: “Real Estate is my go-to band for driving around in the city with the top down. Their tracks have the perfect relaxed beachy vibe, and I’m psyched to hear their new stuff.”

Ted Boggess ‘19: GRANDADDY- LAST PLACE: “Grandaddy made some of the best spacey and stealthily ambitious indie rock music of the turn of the century before going on hiatus. Singles ‘Way We Won’t’ and ‘Evermore’ are as strong as their peak and suggest they’ll be picking up where they left off.”

Wax Idols

WAX IDOLS- HAPPY ENDING: “‘Everybody Gets What They Want’ is an early contender for the song of 2017—sunny and poppy without losing the goth/post-punk influences of their previous releases. Every reason to believe the rest of the album will deliver.”

Charlotte Freccia ‘19: HAIM- (TBA): “Haim is due to release a lil’ something-something this summer, which is perfect, because Haim is the perfect soundtrack to drive through the tree-lined streets of my hideously bougie suburban hometown with the top of my high school friends’ BMW convertible down and the wind in my hair. I apologize for writing that sentence, but, the sentiment still holds. Haim makes dynamic, irresistible California pop that just makes you want to drive, dance, and have long hair and an enviable body, so I’m incredibly excited for their long-time-in-coming summer release, which is being produced by the dynamite team of Ariel Rechtshaid and Rostam Batmanglij (the latter of whom formerly of Vampire Weekend, who have also hinted that their fourth LP will drop this year). Plus, when I saw them early last summer, they treated the crowd to the first single from the new album, ‘Give Me Just A Little of Your Love,’ which sounded like classic Haim––a modern Wilson Philips at their very best.”

Twins: The Visual Pregnancy

BEYONCE’S TWINS: “HOWEVER, the 2017 release I am looking forward to is Beyonce’s twin babies. They are here to save us. We will bow to them as rulers and idols.”
